Welcome to the The Positive Growth Doctor Podcast®! I am your host, Dr. Christina Wilson.
Remember when you were younger, and you did something you wish you didn’t. And there were consequences.
Sometimes, you didn’t learn the lesson right away, right? Because you were young and still learning.
Fast forward, you learn a little bit quicker because you are more mature.
Unfortunately, we can be super hard on ourselves and some of the after effects stay with us over time.
When that happens, it can significantly impact our well-being, which overflows onto other areas of our lives.
In this episode, I explore why how women tend to hold onto negative life events and I give you 7 powerful tools to help you achieve mental freedom and enhance your overall well-being.

Women’s Tendency to Hold onto Negative Thoughts Based on the Research
Women are thinkers. We tend to ruminate over things picking them apart starting at a young age.
There is evidence that this lessens when we get older. But it is worth alleviating this sooner to improve our quality of life across the lifespan.
Is it that women just have better memory? Research suggests that it is more about what we view as important.
We recall some types of information better than our male counterparts, which is associated with other variables rather than overall memory itself.
Unfortunately, much of the academic literature suggests that women are more likely to hold on to the negative memories. The problem lies in our tendency to replay those memories.
It’s when we become enslaved by our past and our missteps that we are at greater risk of being stuck in comparison loops, which are associated with the negative thought loops I often talk about.
We start to focus on what we call cognitive distortions. In my programs, I talk about these in great detail. Distortions are stretches from the truth or reality.
If only I had.. Why can’t I.. I am stupid or bad..
They’re no good for us.
8 Powerful Strategies to Help Women Let Go and Embrace Freedom and Well-Being
The good news is that God gave us a gift. If we come to him, he will take it from us and carry it. As in John 8:36, we are free indeed.
Not so fast you human being. We tend to hold onto it for dear life, right? I usually don’t relinquish it easily.
That comes from our wish to control something that feels so out of control because those thoughts get out of control pretty quickly.
And human beings want to feel like they are doing something about it.
So let’s dial in on how to make that shift so that you can let go of things that are not productive and do not serve you well as God intended.
- Mindfulness and Meditation: This helps you become more mindful and aware of your thoughts and feelings, allowing you to observe without judgment and let go of negativity. I think of it as taking out the mental trash and what doesn’t serve you and engaging in practices that are uplifting and clear your mind of all the clutter. Everyone is different, but devotionals and journaling really help me.
- Cognitive Behavioral Techniques: This is all about challenging the thoughts and changing negative thought patterns. You can do this by identifying cognitive distortions and reframing them into more positive or realistic thoughts.
- Gratitude Journaling: Keeping a gratitude journal to focus on positive aspects of life so that we don’t just write them off or dismiss them. Writing down things they are grateful for can shift attention from negative to positive thoughts.
- Physical Activity: Encourage regular physical activity, which can reduce stress and improve mood. Activities like yoga or walking in nature can be particularly beneficial. I used to do hard core workouts, but have found that I get so much from walking trails and experiencing everything God has given us.
- Positive Affirmations: Use positive affirmations to counteract negative self-talk. Repeating affirmations can help build a more positive mindset over time. Post them on the bathroom mirror.
- Seek Professional Help: Find a great coach that is a good fit for you. I devoted 30 years to serving others as a therapist but have found coaching to be such a beautiful process where the coach and coachee walk alongside one another. I love seeing women have those ah ha moments and experience those positive shifts in life.
- Connect with Supportive People: Building your network of supportive women who can provide encouragement and perspective. We would love to have you join us at the Women’s Empowerment Group on Facebook!

- Limit Exposure to Negative Media: We are often exposed to daily negative news or social media, which can often contribute to maintaining a negative outlook. Switching to joy scrolling from doom scrolling is a game changer.
I hope this helps! I love your heart and am thankful you are here to pour into yourself.
Let's meet up again next week for another episode.
